Quickly and adequately measuring the pressure of the tongue in extension, is now possible with the MyoScale. This new measuring instrument is a handy and affordable alternative to doing this measurement with a myoscanner or another type of measuring station.

Too much tongue pressure forward has consequences during speaking, swallowing and certainly at rest for, among other things, the growth of the jaws and the position of the teeth. Oro-myofunctional therapy (OMFT) can work on reducing the forward pressure. For example, with tongue-clicking exercises, tongue suction exercises, learning the resting position for the tongue, learning a backward alveolar swallow or correcting the pronunciation. It is therefore important to measure the pressure, as one of the examinations that provide the necessary information to start working with OMFT in the right way.

Many users find the tongue pressure measurement with the myoscanner time-consuming and cumbersome. With the MyoScale, the measurement is much easier and faster to perform. The device does not need to be connected to anything and can therefore be picked up and used immediately. This video shows how quickly and easily the measurement can be performed.

Measurement procedure with the MyoScale

Place a clean spacer in front of the mouth and place a clean attachment against which the tongue will press and the measurement can start. Sit to the left or right of the client. Make sure that the lower and upper lips are placed against the spacer of the MyoScale and have the client stick out the tongue straight so that it touches the attachment. Then have him or her press forward with the tongue. The pressure result can be read directly on the window of the MyoScale. Repeat the measurement three times to determine whether all measurements more or less correspond.

When performing the control measurement that takes place after a period of treatment, give the client exactly the same instructions as the first time. If the tongue pressure was a bit high and the client knows that a lower pressure is expected of him or her, then the client may try less hard and therefore press less hard. That is not the intention: maximum pressure should always be given. Proper instruction therefore ensures a correct measurement.

Measurement results

The Myoscale measures in pounds (lbs). Use the following values as common:
– From 4 to 10 years: 0.6 – 0.8 pounds.
– Older than 10 years: 0.8 – 1.6 pounds.

Quick and easy measurements

The MyoScale is easy to use. It has only two buttons. The bottom one is to turn the instrument on (press briefly) or to turn the device off (press a little longer). The top button resets the measurement values to zero after a measurement.

Can be used again immediately

After taking a measurement, only the spacer and the attachment against which the tongue has pressed need to be cleaned. This can be done with disinfectant alcohol. This cleaning does not have to be done immediately; not even if a measurement is taken immediately on a second person. Because every MyoScale is supplied with two spacers for adults, two slightly smaller spacers for children and four attachments. The MyoScale is rechargeable and therefore has a USB-C input. A charging cable and plug are included. Everything is packed in a case that is easy to take with you, for example to another treatment location.
